This happened as early as the Generation 1 Pokemon games, with Fire-type starter Charmander eventually evolving into Fire/Flying-type Pokemon Charizard. As the generations have gone by, more starter Pokemon have started out with one type only to end up with two by the time they reach their final form, though three Pokemon types have yet to be represented in starter evolution lines.

This was pointed out by Reddit user RoseTraveler27, who reminded Pokemon fans that there has yet to be any starter evolutions to add Bug, Rock, or Ice to their Grass/Fire/Water-typing. Meanwhile, only one starter Pokemon evolution has added Psychic-type to the mix, that being Fire/Psychic-type Delphox from Pokemon X and Y, while Piplup’s evolved form Empoleon is the only starter evolution to add Steel-type. Not only that, but Empoleon remains the only Water/Steel-type in the entire Pokemon franchise.

There are a couple of caveats with this information that some Pokemon fans might point out. While some would say that there has never been a Dragon-type evolution for any starter evolutions, Mega Charizard X is a Fire/Dragon-type. Others will say that Eevee’s evolutions would satisfy the Ice-type requirement, but Eevee was only a starter Pokemon in Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee, which is not really considered a main series entry.

The Generation 10 Pokemon games could very well fill the gap and come up with starter Pokemon evolutions that incorporate Bug, Rock, and Ice-types, but that remains to be seen. There are also rumors that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet could bring back Mega Evolutions, and if so, that could open the door for starters to get new forms that add Bug, Rock, and Ice-types to the mix. Official information on the Generation 10 Pokemon games and potential Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC is unavailable at the time of this writing, however.

The future of the Pokemon franchise is largely a mystery at this point, but that could change in the near future. The Pokemon Company traditionally hosts a special Pokemon event in February to mark the franchise’s anniversary, and it’s possible such an event will take place next month to shine a light on Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLC plans, at the very least.
